What does my car service include
Regular car servicing can help a vehicle run safely and efficiently. But many are confused about what kind of service their car needs, how much it will cost and what to expect.
In this blog, we’ll dive deeper into what the different types of service are, how to know which one is for you and when it’s time to get a car service.
What is a car service
A car service involves multiple inspections and repairs to keep your vehicle in the best possible condition over its lifespan. It includes procedures like checking and replacing engine oil and oil filters, checking levels of coolant, checking the braking system, and tyre pressure among other things.
This is not to be confused with an MOT test, which is a mandatory annual check-up of your vehicle to ensure that it is safe to drive on public roads and meets the government-set environmental standards.
When do you need a car service
On average, most car manufacturers recommend getting a car service every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. However, this could also depend on what kind of trips you’re making. For instance, if you do a lot of short trips, planning a long road trip or haven’t gotten your car serviced in a long time, you might need to book a car service earlier.

What are the different types of car service
There are typically three types of car service: interim, full and major. We have included details of each below.
Interim service
This is the most basic service as it requires the least amount of work being done to a car. This service is usually aimed at high-mileage drivers who cover around 20,000 miles annually, with an interim service recommended every six months.
This service typically consists of an oil change and a fresh oil filter and includes basic checks of the car’s components. Moreover, the car's drive belts, brakes, and suspension systems are examined for any potential problems, and necessary fluids such as coolant and power-steering fluid are replenished if needed.
Full car service
A full car service goes beyond the scope of an interim service, as is usually recommended every 12,000 miles or 12 months. Besides changing the oil and its filter, it incorporates a more detailed inspection of the vehicle, potentially including a check for wear in components like wheel bearings.
Other procedures might include changing the air filter, examining the air-conditioning system and battery, and conducting a rigorous test of the brakes.
Major service
A major service is the most comprehensive service recommended every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
This service involves a thorough check and potential replacement of several components, such as the air-conditioning gas, brake and power steering fluid, cabin filter, and spark plugs, on top of the oil and filter change included in a basic interim check.
